Contamination

Policy on cross-contamination - Burkholderia cepacia

The ACFCQ appeals to the goodwill and intelligence of Quebec’s adult CF population by asking them to be concerned for their own safety and that of others. The ACFCQ encourages them to be responsible and develop hygienic habits that will decrease the risks of Burkholderia cepacia contamination.

A reminder of measures adopted by the ACFCQ Board of Directors (May 1993)

1 - When coughing, always cover your mouth with your hand;
2 - Avoid intimate contact with persons who have cystic fibrosis;
3 - Avoid handshakes;
4 - Avoid being in close quarters or poorly ventilated areas with persons who have cystic fibrosis (e.g., a car or a bedroom);
5 - If you know you have a B. cepacia infection, wear a mask in the presence of persons who have cystic fibrosis;
6 - Never drink from a container (glass, bottle, cup, etc.) or eat with utensils used by another person with cystic fibrosis;
7 - Make a habit of washing your hands regularly, especially when handling objects used by persons with cystic fibrosis;
8 - Never use medical equipment (nebulizers, syringes, tubings, etc.) that belongs to other persons with cystic fibrosis.
